Plans in the works for Singapore Changi Airport to go passport free

Passengers departing from Singapore Changi Airport from 2024 can do so without a passport.

Singapore Changi Airport plans to implement a pioneering automated immigration-clearing system using only the passengers’ biometric data.

In a parliament session, Communications Minister Josephine Teo said, ‘Singapore will be one of the first few countries in the world to introduce automated, passport-free immigration clearance.’

Changi Airport already uses facial recognition software and biometric technology in certain automated lanes at immigration checkpoints.

The 2024 changes will ‘reduce the need for passengers to repeatedly present their travel documents at touch points and allow for more seamless and convenient processing.’

CNN explained that ‘biometrics will be used to create a ‘single token of authentication’ that will be employed at various automated touch points – from bag drops to immigration clearance and boarding – eliminating the need for physical travel documents like boarding passes and passports.’

Teo said that their immigration systems need to accommodate the growing number of travellers efficiently while still ensuring airport safety.
