The largest country in South America
Brazil is the world’s fifth largest country. This is both by population and geographical area. Moreover, it makes up approximately 47% of South America, while also bordering almost every country on that continent.
A destination loved by tourists
Approximately 6.4 million tourists pay Brazil a visit each year. About half of them head to Rio de Janeiro. Interestingly, the country’s shanty towns (known as ‘favelas’) are also popular tourist attractions which see a large number of tourists every year.

The largest coffee exporter
If you are someone who enjoys a good cup of coffee, you have most probably tasted Brazil’s coffee. Over 40% of the world’s coffee comes from Brazil, making it the world’s top coffee producer and exporter. The cultivation of coffee took off in the 1800’s and has contributed to Brazil’s trade power and growth.
Many UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Brazil is currently home to 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is more than any other country in South America. The sites are all globally cherished and convey Brazil’s outstanding environmental, cultural and historical wealth. They include the popular Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Iguaçu National Park which is home to the impressive and jaw-dropping Iguaçu Falls.

Expect many Japanese people
After Japan, Brazil has the highest population of Japanese people. Immigration from Japan increased around the 1950’s when many Japanese people arrived to work on the coffee plantations. Today, approximately 2.3 million Brazilians are of Japanese descent and the Japanese-Brazilian culture is an integral part of the country’s identity.
