A rich history
Makhanda has a very rich history. It is home to the Albany Museum which was established in 1855 and is one of the oldest museums in South Africa. The museum’s exhibitions cover a range of topics including natural sciences, history and archeology.

When in Makhanda, the International Library of African Music (ILAM) is the place to be. The researching, publishing and teaching centre is home to more than 200 traditional African musical instruments. The National Arts Festival

The quaint town of Makhanda is also known for hosting the National Arts Festival. During the annual multi-disciplinary art event, Makhanda transforms into a melting pot of different art forms. This year, the festival will take place from 20 – 30 June. The event is worth experiencing, especially for art enthusiasts who wish to explore different artistic features including music, dance, opera and other performing arts. There are also awesome markets and fascinating craft stalls worth visiting.
