A South African man faces two charges of assault with a deadly weapon after he reportedly stabbed two of his crew mates on a cruise ship in Juneau, Alaska, this week.
The FBI arrested Ntando Sogoni on Tuesday for “allegedly stabbing multiple people with medical scissors” onboard a cruise ship.
The 35-year-old was working on the ship on Monday when other ship employees noticed him trying to deploy a lifeboat.
The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Alaska, stated that the ship’s security subsequently contacted Sogoni and escorted him to the ship’s medical centre for an assessment.
Upon arrival, Sogoni reportedly physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse in the examination room.
According to court documents, he then entered another examination room where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a US patient, who was being examined. She sustained multiple injuries to her arm, hand and face.
Sogoni proceeded to stab two security guards who intervened, one in the head and one in the back and shoulders. He was detained and held in the ship’s jail before the FBI arrested him the following day.
He is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction in violation of 18 U.S.C. §113(a)(3) (Assaults within maritime and territorial jurisdiction).
If convicted, Sogoni could face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250 000 (about R46 32 537.50) fine for each count.
