How to pack for a winter getaway

Posted on 4 June 2024 By Savanna Douglas

There’s nothing quite like a winter getaway. The fresh cold air. Hot chocolate. Fireplaces. But there’s one downside to these winter trips, no matter how short they are: packing for them. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in.

But first…

Before you begin packing, you need to be conscious about your layers and how you’ll be wearing your winter clothes.

The Base Layer

Start with a good base layer. This is your first line of defence against the cold. Opt for thermal underwear made from moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic fibres. They keep you warm without making you feel like a sweaty mess.

The Mid Layer

Next, pack a few mid-layer items, such as sweaters or fleeces. These pieces provide insulation by trapping heat. A lightweight fleece is great for active days, while a chunky knit sweater adds a touch of cosy chic for evenings out.

The Outer Layer

Finally, your outer layer. This includes your winter coat, which should be waterproof and wind-resistant. A puffer jacket filled with down or synthetic insulation is ideal. If you’re heading somewhere particularly wet or snowy, a shell jacket for added waterproofing is a smart addition.

How to pack for a winter getaway

Winter clothes can be bulky, but with some clever packing strategies, you’ll maximise your suitcase space.

Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also reduces wrinkles. Roll your base layers, sweaters, and pants to create tight, compact bundles.

Use Compression Bags

Compression bags are a game-changer for packing bulky items. Simply place your clothes in the bag, seal it, and roll out the air. This significantly reduces the volume of your items, giving you more room for other essentials.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items

If possible, wear your heaviest items on the plane. Think boots, a coat, and even a chunky scarf. Not only will you save space in your luggage, but you’ll also stay warm and cosy on the flight.

Or, if you’re driving, keep that bulky jacket on hand as a pillow or blanket for the car!

Plan Your Outfits

Think about what you’ll be doing on your trip and plan your outfits accordingly. This will prevent overpacking and ensure you have everything you need. Stick to a colour scheme so you can mix and match pieces easily.

Don’t forget your winter accessories! Pick your warmest beanie, and best gloves and pack them on top of your rolled-up bundles or packing cubes. Thermal socks are also great to have, especially at night. Depending on your accommodation, you can save space by ditching the slippers and opting for thermal socks instead.

Pack Multi-purpose Items

Look for items that can serve more than one purpose. A puffer jacket with a detachable inner layer can double as a lighter jacket for milder days. Leggings can be worn under pants for extra warmth or on their own for lounging in your accommodation.

Don’t forget other winter essentials

Remember the non-clothing essentials. Pack a good moisturizer to combat dry skin, lip balm, and hand warmers. A travel-sized laundry detergent can be handy for washing smaller items in your hotel sink.

Packing for a winter getaway might seem daunting, but with a bit of planning and these tips, you’ll be ready to tackle the cold in style. Enjoy your snowy adventures and make the most of the winter wonderland waiting for you. Happy travels and stay warm!
