Africa’s game lodges are slowly removing single supplements. This is to make safari travel more attractive for solo travellers. The single supplement has long been a deterrent for solo travellers looking to enjoy an African Safari.
A rise in solo travel
According to Travel News, solo travel has been identified as a key trend in 2024. There are more and more solo travellers across various travel sectors.
In particular, the cruise industry has seen a rise in solo travellers. In response, many cruise lines have come up with special packages and removed the single supplement fee.
The African Safari industry is also slowly moving towards making safari adventures more affordable for solo travellers by doing the same.
Lodges warming up to more affordable rates
Wilderness, which operates in Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, has waived single supplements for parts of 2024 and 2025 outside the high season, reports Travel Weekly.
According to the safari operator, low seasons (which are typically during November and March) offer different wildlife sightings and more affordable rates which are suitable for solo travellers.
Travel Weekly also quoted Sherwin Banda, President of African Travel, who stated that departures without single supplements would provide a great opportunity to explore without incurring extra costs. Banda further emphasized the importance of safety on safaris.
Other lodges, including South Africa’s Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, Botswana’s Great Plains Selinda Camp and the Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp in Tanzania, have also waived this fee according to African safari providers Ker & Downey. Kwando Camps in Botswana goes as far as to offer heavy discounts for single travellers.
Indeed, the safari sector is not one which can easily be adjusted to suit single travellers. Factors such as limited rooms make it challenging to absorb the cost of a solo traveller in a double occupancy room. Be that as it may, the trend towards more inclusive pricing is clearly gaining momentum on the continent.
