Small Town Spotlight: Gonubie

Posted on 19 August 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Nestled along the picturesque coastline of the Eastern Cape, Gonubie is a delightful seaside town situated where the Gonubie River gracefully meets the ocean. Located approximately 21 kilometres northeast of East London, this serene retreat offers a charming escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The town is rich in history, with its name evolving from the original term “Gqunube,” a nod to the area’s deep-rooted heritage among the early Khoisan and Xhosa peoples.

Although officially categorised as a suburb, it has developed a distinct identity, exuding the warmth and intimacy of a close-knit community.

The town’s unique character is enhanced by its blend of historical significance and coastal beauty. Its location provides breathtaking views and a tranquil environment, making it a popular spot for those seeking a peaceful lifestyle while still being conveniently close to the vibrant city of East London. Whether you’re strolling along the beach, exploring the river’s edge, or simply enjoying the local charm, this town offers a refreshing and inviting atmosphere for all who visit.

What to do in Gonubie

The town features stunning beaches and scenic riverside picnic areas, making it an excellent destination for leisurely afternoons. Gonubie Beach, in particular, is a highlight with its impressive boardwalk that provides sweeping views of the ocean. The beach is complemented by well-maintained man-made tidal pools and lush, verdant surroundings.

Important Update: Although Gonubie Beach was once awarded the prestigious Blue Flag designation, it lost this status in 2007 and has not regained it since. From June to November, the area becomes a prime spot for watching playful dolphins and the majestic migration of humpback and southern right whales, adding a touch of natural wonder to this charming coastal town.

Located where Gonubie Main Road meets the ocean, the boardwalk is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The parking area provides easy access to the boardwalk and nearby tidal pools. A walk along this path offers breathtaking views of the coast and leads to Gonubie Beach and the river mouth.

Gonubie Bird Sanctuary

The bird sanctuary offers a peaceful escape. It is home to approximately 160 bird species, including several notable endemics, providing a diverse birdwatching experience. The sanctuary is surrounded by coastal wetlands and forest, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts.

Gonubie Golf Course

Gonubie Golf Club is a welcoming environment for both members and guests. The course has 18 tees and 12 greens, providing a satisfying round of golf. After playing, unwind with a drink on the deck, which boasts stunning sea views.

The Point (Gonubie Bay) Surf Guide

The Point at Gonubie Bay is a popular surfing spot with a consistent point break. Offshore winds from the northwest create favourable conditions, with groundswells more common than windswells. The best time to surf is when the tide is low and rising. While the area can become crowded, it is important to exercise caution because sharks have been spotted here.
