Qantas is set to enhance its Sydney to Johannesburg route by deploying the Airbus A380 starting on 30 September resulting in a significant increase in seat capacity.
As reported by Travel News, Michi Messner, Qantas’ Regional Manager for Africa, highlighted that the introduction of the A380 will lead to a substantial rise in available seats. The new aircraft will offer approximately 55 000 additional seats per year, effectively doubling capacity during peak periods. Currently, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on this route has 236 seats, but with the A380, this will increase to 485 seats.
This shift to the A380 is a major upgrade for the high-demand route, which will now feature four seating classes. Passengers can choose from 14 first-class suites, 70 business-class seats (up from the current 42), 60 premium economy seats (compared to 28 currently), and 341 economy-class seats.
A notable addition to the aircraft is an onboard lounge, seating 10 passengers, exclusively available to those travelling in premium classes. This amenity is expected to provide extra comfort and a more luxurious experience for first and business-class travellers.
Messner also mentioned that flight frequencies will be adjusted based on demand, with services alternating between five and six flights weekly after the A380 begins operation.
