The term ‘responsible tourism’ is not unfamiliar to the travel scene. As an increasingly popular topic, it has led to many travel stakeholders considering more sustainable, integrated and responsible approaches to travel and tourism.

As a traveller, there are various ways in which you can play your part and contribute towards responsible tourism. Here are just a few of them:

Reduce waste

Be intentional about reducing waste, as well as minimizing the use of plastic. Where possible, make use of reusable containers to generate less waste.

You can also reduce your plastic waste by carrying a reusable water bottle, using a refillable coffee cup and bringing your reusable shopping bags. Avoid single-use plastic items like straws, cutlery and toiletries whenever possible.

Consume locally

When travelling, we consume. From the food we eat to the souvenirs we buy, consumption does indeed form part of travel.

In order to contribute to sustainable and socially responsible tourism, eat at restaurants where the locals go and where local cuisine is served.

Purchase your souvenirs in handicraft stores and be intentional about consuming local, as well as supporting local artistic and cultural traditions.

Choose sustainable accommodation

As much as possible, opt for eco-friendly accommodation such as eco-lodges, eco-hotels or guesthouses that prioritise sustainability.

Look for certifications like LEED or Green Globe, which ensure that the property follows environmentally friendly practices.

Respect cultural differences

As you explore various destinations, you will encounter different people, diverse cultures and interesting ways of life. Often, the cultures you are exposed to as you travel may differ from your own.

Before you travel, do your research on the destination you will be visiting and be well-informed about the cultural norms.

Part of being a responsible traveller includes knowing when and how to respect cultural norms. As such, it is important to always try to be respectful and considerate.

Respect wildlife and natural habitats

When exploring natural areas, it is crucial to respect animals and their habitat. Observe wildlife from a safe distance. Avoid feeding animals and never disturb their natural behaviour. Follow designated trails and respect any set rules or regulations to protect the environment.
