This decision coincided with the nation’s Deaf Week 2024, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.

Regina Esparon, representing the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, presented the motion. She highlighted that over 1,000 Seychellois are deaf or have hearing loss, emphasising sign language’s crucial role in communication and development.

The Association for Deaf People, established in 2005, has been advocating for the rights of the hearing-impaired community.

This legislation aligns with international standards on disability rights.

Anita Gardner, Chairperson of the Association for People with Hearing Impairment, celebrated the decision as “a big achievement” and “a victory for people who are hearing impaired,” as reported by Seychelles News Agency.

The move is expected to impact education significantly. Sign language will become obligatory in schools, offering students the opportunity to learn it. Currently, it is taught at Mont Fleuri alongside other disciplines.

This official recognition aims to enhance educational opportunities, improve access to public services, and foster better societal integration for deaf individuals.
