Colourful attractions around Africa

Posted on 9 October 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

Africa is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, as well as its many vibrant cultures.

The continent is also home to a number of vibrant, boldly colourful and picturesque attractions worth exploring.

Here’s a look at some of Africa’s most colourful attractions:

Lake Retba, Senegal

Located not too far from Dakar, Lake Retba is also known as Lac Rose or The Pink Lake. The attraction’s water is a shade of pink due to a special type of algae that is attracted to the lake’s high salt content.

It offers a perfect natural pop of color, especially when contrasted against the white of the salt hills piled up alongside the lake. The best time to visit the interesting body of water is during the dry season (between November and June) as that is when it is at its most colourful.

Bo-Kaap, South Africa

The iconic and colourful neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap is rich in history, culture and art. It is situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city center.

The neighborhood’s brightly-painted houses will not fail to grab your attention. They are picture-perfect and carry a powerful Cape Malay influence from centuries ago. Moreover, the area is also home to several galleries and museums.

Chamarel, Mauritius

Located southwest of Mauritius, Chamarel is a village which is famous for its landscapes and natural beauty. It is also where you will find one of the world’s most colourful geographical formations.

A small area of sand dunes has been dubbed the Seven Coloured Earths. This is because of its rainbow effect of different-hued sands layered side by side.

The earth truly makes a spectacle out of itself by showing off in red, brown, violet, yellow, green, orange, violet, and shades in between. The actual definition of each color may also well vary with whoever is looking at it. Undoubtedly, the attraction is worth seeing at least once in the life of every eager traveller.
