Cape Town International Kite Festival returns and marks its 30 years of raising awareness

Posted on 17 October 2024 By Louise Bell

As October is globally recognised as Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s only fitting that the Cape Town International Kite Festival takes flight and adorns the skies with a confetti of colour.

This event raises funds for Cape Mental Health, which provides cost-free services for individuals to receive the help they need regarding mental health and awareness. This organisation also strongly focuses on providing these services to young people to educate and empower today’s youth.

The Cape Town International Kite Festival, which will occur on 27 October on Melkbosstrand, is known as the oldest kite-filled event in South Africa.

There will be many events and activities, from watching internationally acclaimed kite fliers work their magic to kite-making workshops. Flying kites signify freedom, creativity, and resilience by navigating and painting the air with vibrant colours and hues through a tug of a string.

The EduKite Competition is a popular event during this special occasion, which allows children from various schools to participate in a kite-decorating and construction competition.

Ingrid Daniels, the CEO of Cape Mental Health, commented further on the ties between mental health awareness and fliting kites:

“…It is in these times that we direct our sails to provide mental health interventions that invest in lives and give back hope, build and strengthen resilience and empower individuals and communities. Despite the fragility of the string, it allows the kite to fly higher and higher, rising above the circumstances that life throws our way. #HopeOnAString brings a message of hope, potential and encouragement.”

At the event, you’ll also be able to interact with mental health ambassadors and dedicated volunteers, who will provide an open line of communication and create a dialogue to share and hear stories from individuals with similar experiences.
