Unsure what to pack to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety? Here are a few key components to add to your pet hiking packing list.
Colourful harness and leash
While it might be tempting to let your dog roam free, you should keep it on a leash to ensure its and others’ safety. Dogs’ behaviours can be unpredictable, and they could quickly run off when they see a creature nearby.
A tether is an effective way to simulate a sense of freedom outdoors while still allowing your pet to control its movements. If your pet does happen to get loose, a colourful harness could be an effective tool to spot him from afar and return him to safety.
Small plastic bags
On your hiking expedition in the mountains, your dog will likely eventually need to use the restroom. Carrying small bags is a common courtesy to ensure you leave mountain trails clean, with no surprise fellow hikers will discover later on their shoes.
Be sure to discard the used bags in the waste bins often found on the trails. This way, you’ll leave nature how you found it and walk the trails confidently.
Water & bowl
Walking expeditions can be tiring for pets, especially in the summer. With excess fur and short legs, these tail-wagging pals will become thirsty. By carrying water and a bowl, you can refresh and revitalise your pet efficiently to ensure their comfort and safety on the trail. If you’re worried about the space a water bowl will take up in your backpack, invest in a collapsible or blowup water bowl for your pet.
Pocket first-aid kit
Pets have a way of getting into some tricky situations while on a hike. From splinters to cuts while jumping into bushes, hiking can be an injury-prone activity. A mini first-aid kit is the perfect way to ensure you can alleviate some of the pain and discomfort of an injured pet while outdoors. This could include items such as:
- Bandages
- Tweezers
- A chemical solution to clean wounds
