Within the stunning scenery of the Masai Mara, a kaleidoscope of unique and unlikely animal occurrences lies. Latest Sightings reports an epic instance of bravery and surprising behaviour from three male lions from the Sonkai Tribe.
These kings of the jungle braved the strong currents of the Rongai River and were seen swimming to the other side of the river. This hard-to-believe moment was captured by Richard Mututua, a game ranger who showed guests around the premises.
While big cats swimming in water might be hard to believe, it’s more common than you think. They sometimes swim to other river banks to hunt for prey on the other side. As it’s currently rainy season in Kenya, the changing landscape could also have motivated the lions to swim across.
The video depicts the two males taking to the river waters and almost immediately becoming swept up by the current. The last male is hesitant to approach this challenge, likely because he has witnessed the struggle his fellow feline friends are facing in the water.
The battle of big cats vs. water commences and becomes a nail-biting affair as the lions fight for their lives. The first lion pulls up from the raging waters and goes to safety. The second lion was also successful, but the mystery remains about whether the third lion could find the courage to take on the river waters.
