Sabie is a popular tourist destination owing to its scenery and cascading waterfalls, 360 km east of Joburg and 64 km west of the Kruger National Park.

Its name comes from the siSwati word ulusaba (fearful river) because the area was once the happy hunting ground of the Nile crocodile. Afrikaner settlers changed its name to Sabie. A town sprang to life after the discovery of gold but these days its chief industry is forestry, with the plantations surrounding Sabie forming one of the world’s biggest man-made forests.
Sabie’s economy relies on tourism to thrive. Luckily, there are many attractions, many of them natural. The most popular is Lone Creek Falls, roughly 10 km from the town. Then there are Bridal Veil, Maria Shire, Horseshoe, Forest and Sabie Falls (in town).
With so much natural beauty on offer, it’s no surprise that mountain bikers flock to the area like moths to a flame. The area boasts several kilometres of flowing singletrack and downhill slaloms. The Noon 2 Moon 10-hour endurance race is a popular event that attracts racing enthusiasts countrywide.
Fancy a pint?
The Sabie Brewery (sabiebrewery.com) hasn’t been around for long, but what it lacks in experience, it makes up for with location, quality and passion. Hops Hollow Country House and Brewery in the Longtom Pass bought the brewery in December. New management says they strive to offer patrons new food, beers and live music. Guided tours allow guests to experience first- hand how things work, ending with a tasting of beers and local products.

Falls for Africa
In her blog, Jen from Africa, Jennifer Mostert (jenfrom.africa) says it is possible to see all six waterfalls in one day but asks, why would you, when travelling is about taking your time and soaking up the moments?
‘There are six stunning waterfalls within a 17 km radius of Sabie,’ she writes. ‘The Forest, Maria Shire and Mac Mac Falls are conveniently situated near the main road to Graskop along the Panorama Route. The other three, Horseshoe, Lone Creek and Bridal Veil Falls, are on a road that snakes out of the village along the valley floor.’ These are well worth the visit, with plenty of Insta- worthy moments.
Another attraction is the Komatiland Forest Industry Museum (013 764 1058), where visitors may enjoy a self-guided tour and gain a unique insight into South Africa’s forestry history. As well as witnessing various exhibits, you’ll see a miniature set of shoes carved out of wood by an Anglo- Boer war prisoner on St Helena, the oldest known South African frame saw, and a handmade clothes peg made in Ireland over 100 years ago. Pop in for a visit, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4.30 pm.
Sabie is beautiful and worth exploring if you’re in the area – – and even if you’re not. We suggest heading online to discover what the area offers before visiting because there is a lot, and you wouldn’t want to short-change yourself.
