A high-speed rail project linking Gauteng and Limpopo provinces is in development, with plans to connect Pretoria to Polokwane in its initial phase, followed by extensions to Louis Trichardt and Musina.

The 420-kilometer rail line, passing through Hammanskraal, Bela-Bela, and Mokopane, forms part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s National Rail Masterplan. Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi met in Mookgophong in October to approve an implementation protocol.
As per Travel News, Gauteng Tourism Authority spokesperson Barba Gaoganediwe, the connection aims to reduce traffic and strengthen economic ties between the provinces. The project will also establish a direct corridor to Zimbabwe.
The development coincides with the Gautrain’s scheduled 2026 expansion, which includes 150km of new track and 19 additional stations across Gauteng.
Both provincial governments intend to implement joint tourism marketing initiatives, including a golfing route and shared events.
While construction timelines remain unconfirmed, the masterplan is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
A Joint Project Manager is yet to be appointed.
