This event, Wildlife Protection and Food Systems Transformation: Boosting NDCs for a Greener Future, focuses on steps governments should incorporate for a Climate Action Plan and align food systems, wildlife, and climate targets in national strategies for a positive impact.

Ngene, Wildlife Secretary in Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism, reported that Kenya needs to attend to and consider the country’s wildlife to achieve climate change goals. He determined that many implementations for wildlife conservation should be incorporated to assist, namely:

  • Water provision for elephants.
  • Feeding programs installed during droughts for vulnerable species.
  • Aiming to expand community conservancies from 11% to 20% by 2030, according to the IISD.

Atta Travel reports that this emphasis on wildlife conservation is likely due to the harrowing impact the 2022 drought in Kenya had regarding their wild animal population numbers. This was where more than 1000 reported cases of wildlife deaths were reported.
