South African Tourism has joined hands with Ogilvy on the ‘Live South Africa’ campaign.
As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, the campaign features a custom-made pinhole camera that is made entirely from local materials.
Dubbed the ‘South Africam’, it is made from Cape Beech wood, scrap metal and cork leather strapping. It is also decorated with traditional designs by visual artist Samurai Farai.

So far, three local photographers (Tsele Nthane, Andile Phewa and Andile Buka) have made use of the camera to capture authentic shots of South African life.
From Soweto’s vibrant culture to Madikwe’s breathtaking wilderness, it will all be exhibited this December at Amsterdam’s Restaurant Braai.
Through a unique artistic tool, the country’s soul is showcased and authentic beauty captured. There are plans to expand the campaign by involving more local photographers to offer diverse perspectives about the country’s life and culture.
