The innovative system, designed to streamline the boarding process, was unveiled to key stakeholders before the festive season, aligning with LIA’s vision to become Africa’s SMART airport of choice.

‘This milestone reflects our commitment to delivering exceptional convenience and value-added processes for passengers,’ said Rampa Rammopo, CEO of LIA, during the launch. ‘As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we remain dedicated to providing a seamless and memorable travel experience.’

The new system, implemented in partnership with FlySafair, allows passengers to scan their boarding passes or QR codes at automated gates, significantly reducing boarding times while maintaining essential ID verification processes. Lanseria staff will continue to provide personalized customer service, ensuring the system enhances rather than replaces the human touch.

‘This is just the beginning of our SMART airport strategy,’ Rammopo added. ‘In the coming years, passengers can expect further innovations, including biometric technology for secure international travel and self-service bag-drop systems.’

The “Tap and Fly” rollout is part of the airport’s broader push to modernize operations, with future phases set to introduce automated security gates for staff and crew. LIA emphasizes that these advancements will not lead to job losses but will enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Rammopo concluded, ‘As South Africa’s leading privately-owned airport, we are proud to pioneer this technology, ensuring faster boarding times while maintaining the warm and personalized service our passengers value.’

Lanseria International Airport’s automated boarding gates are now operational in its domestic terminal, with plans to expand the system as part of its ongoing SMART strategy.
