A new R900 million lease agreement in Paardevlei in Somerset West has been spearheaded to develop a world-class film set and studio to take Cape Town’s film industry and production to the next level.
With innovative facilities and building upgrades already located on the premises, this project hopes to join the big leagues (on an international level) regarding film. Times Live has reported that James Vos, a mayoral committee member, has stated his excitement for the project:
“We are thrilled to see this agreement come to fruition, and I am confident that it will be a major catalyst for Cape Town’s creative economy. This lease has the potential to create hundreds of jobs, generate nearly a billion rand for the local economy, and boost tourism to our city. The creative economy is one of the top-performing sectors in Cape Town, and this project will significantly contribute to its expansion.”
The new film set and studio development are set to incorporate elements and structures absent from the current filming studios. One development mentioned was a sea and underwater sound stage.
This is to push film productions and sets to match international filming standards and lead to becoming a top filming destination for creative projects on a global scale. This, in turn, will also help local productions to use these fantastic filming facilities to revolutionise the industry.
