Think twice before using a toilet in the bush! A highly venomous Mozambican spitting cobra was discovered hiding in a toilet bowl at the Masorini Picnic Site near the Phalaborwa gate in the Kruger National Park this week.
The incident occurred on February 2, when a ranger received a report of a snake sighting in the ladies’ bathroom.
The ranger quickly contacted the Phalaborwa Snake Club, who were fortunately nearby at Sable Dam. Upon arrival, the team identified the snake as a Mozambican spitting cobra, one of South Africa’s most venomous snakes.
The cobra, measuring 1.2 meters long, had retreated deep into the toilet bowl rim, making it difficult to reach.
Using a portable endoscopy camera, the snake catchers located the reptile and carefully dismantled the toilet to safely capture it.
The snake was later released unharmed at an undisclosed location.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the ranger, he contacted members of the Phalaborwa Snake Club, who were nearby at Sable Dam. They responded immediately. Upon arrival, they identified the snake as a Mozambique Spitting Cobra.👀 pic.twitter.com/KcEbxyE1Zv

The Mozambican spitting cobra
The Mozambican spitting cobra (Naja mossambica) is a highly venomous snake known for its ability to spit venom accurately up to 3 meters. Its venom can cause severe pain, blindness, or even permanent damage if it makes contact with the eyes. While its bite is potentially deadly, the snake is generally shy and will only attack if threatened.

What to do if you unexpectedly encounter a snake
If you happen upon a snake. Don’t panic, and follow these steps:
- Do not approach or provoke the snake. Back away slowly and maintain at least 5 meters distance. Sudden movements may trigger a defensive response. Keep children and pets well away from the area.
- Note its location, appearance, and behaviour from a safe distance. If possible, take a photo to help with identification. Don’t lose sight of the snake, as this information will help the snake catcher.
- Contact a local snake catcher or wildlife authority immediately.
During snake season (especially in hot, humid weather), always check dark spaces, including behind and under beds, in showers, and stored items. Wear closed shoes when walking outdoors, keep grass short around buildings, and use a torch after dark. Oh, and don’t forget to check the loo!
