The proposed mining project in Zimbabwe’s Hwange Park’s Sinamatella Black Rhino Intensive Protection Zone is believed to pose a threat to the endangered black rhino population. The Hwange National Park is renowned for its safaris and is a major attraction for international visitors.

As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, ZimParks fears that the negative impact of mining could deter tourism and harm conservation efforts.

Furthermore, the Sinamatella region also holds cultural significance, as the historic Bumbusi Monument serves as a site for annual rainmaking ceremonies by the local Nambya-speaking communities.

According to ZimParks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, mining in the ecologically sensitive area would pose a danger to the Park’s growing black rhino population. Moreover, there are a number of other concerns regarding habitat destruction, pollution and potential groundwater disruption.

The project could potentially exacerbate water shortages in the Park which is home to Africa’s second-largest elephant population.

ZimParks has since reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Zimbabwe’s natural heritage for future generations. The organization has further stated that conservation and sustainable tourism must take priority over short-term extractive industries.
