Tour operators discontinue camel rides in Egypt

Airbnb, together with dozens of tour operators in Egypt, has pledged to discontinue the selling of tours for camel and animal rides at top Egyptian destinations.

This follows an investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

As reported by Travel News, PETA published a report which brought to light the cruel living conditions that working animals (such as camels and horses) have to endure.

The organization found examples of malnourishment, abuse, as well as the unethical discarding of animals which are injured or too old to continue their work.

According to PETA Executive Vice President, Tracy Reiman, an increasing number of travel operators are rejecting the horror of animal rides and encouraging tourists to enjoy the stunning views offered by the Great Pyramids without supporting cruelty to animals.

The list of operators that have agreed to discontinue their animal-riding tour offerings includes Airbnb, British Airways Holidays, Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, Exodus Adventure Travels, Grand Circle Corporation, TCS World Travel and Scott Dunn.

‘PETA applauds Airbnb and other travel companies for shunning these shameful rides and urges Egyptian authorities to show it cares one iota and act to defend the animals,’ shared Reiman.

As reported by Travel Pulse, PETA has reached out to the country’s government officials for a number of years about the issue, including the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism.

The organization continues attempts to lobby the Egyptian government to introduce regulations for working animals within the tourism sector.
