Recently, I went away for a weekend to gorge myself silly on gourmet food and the wines of the Robertson Valley.
I love food festivals – the smells, the tastes, the fresh produce and energy of being surrounded by people who have as much passion for food as I do. But Robertson Slow is a little different. Individual wine farms host their own intimate events showcasing their own wines, food or produce. All culminates at a regional food and wine market where visitors can sample more wines, nurse their hangovers from the night before, taste cheeses, chocolates, preserves and chilli sauces while sitting on hay bales listening to live music. Sound fabulous? It is.
I won’t lie, we went completely over the top a seven-course organic meal on the Friday night at Bon Cap, followed by a 4-courser at Rigg’s Restaurant at the Mooivallei cheese factory for the Saturday lunch. We dragged ourselves away around 5pm to be atViljoensdrift for a cruise on the Breede River (accompanied by bottles of Sangria) before a ‘magic of spices’ curry evening.

Rijk: You’re turning soft.
Leigh: Carry me.
We survived the Sunday market and bought loads of delicious goodies without tasting too many of them.
