Some hotels, guest houses and resorts are just one of a kind. We love originals, and we know you do too. Azulik in Quintana Roo, Mexico aims to ‘reconnect people with nature, art, and ancestry.’
The resort comprises different sections, from bamboo villas operating entirely without electricity, to a yoga retreat, to their offering of creative workshops and even a fashion line.
‘We are looking for people who want to dream with us, guided by our playful spirit and the urgent demands of the Earth,’ the resort says on its website.
Hidden in the jungle and facing the ocean, Azulik draws inspiration from ancient Mayan culture. The entire resort is built above ground, creating a ‘tree house’ feeling.
The building style uses organic architecture. ‘That means, it has been built with respect to the surrounding nature, in order to disturb and destroy as little as possible of the plants and wildlife,’ says travel writer Anders Husa.
The resort is all about relaxation. On a visit, Husa asked their host where the shower was. ‘There is none,’ the host replied. ‘Here at Azulik we believe that showers contribute to stress in modern day life. Thus, we encourage you to take your time for a proper bath, and wash your hair with the help of the coconut shell cup.’
A one night stay for two persons will set you back an average of R7,500 per night.
