How to feel like every day is Garden Day

Posted on 20 October 2024 By Louise Bell

While Garden Day 2024, generally on 20 October, might have bloomed and is ending, there’s no reason why this celebration has to end. South Africa has endless landscapes of cultivated and managed green landscapes, whether public or private.

Are you unsure how to add a garden celebration dash to your life? Here are a few activities you’ll enjoy even if you find yourself in a concrete jungle.

Volunteer at a community garden

What better way to spend an afternoon than by getting your hands dirty and seeing life grow before your eyes? Community gardens usually grow various plants and produce to benefit the community in several ways.

Whether teaching impoverished individuals how to cultivate their own produce or simply growing plants to feed people in need, community gardens give back in an exceptional way. Be sure to visit your local community garden and see the type of harvests (physical, spiritual and mental) that await you.

Visit your local botanical garden

There is a kaleidoscope of botanical gardens in Africa with many plants, structures, and attractions to experience. From mid-air walkways to endangered plant species to marvel at, there is something for every kind of nature lover.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a must if you want to explore the cream of the crop when visiting curated garden landscapes. With a great emphasis on showcasing the indigenous plants of South Africa, you’ll be able to learn all about the local fauna and flora of this country.

Go pot shopping for your houseplants

If you live in an apartment, Garden Day might be more tricky to celebrate if you don’t have a green patch in your home. But why not consider your houseplants as your indoor garden? You can show your indoor babies some love by purchasing new pots to liven up their living quarters.

Not only will it spruce up your decor, but it will also give you the opportunity to repot your plants and get your hands dirty.
