Posted on 14 January 2025 By Louise Bell

From witnessing the city while it hums along to helping you stay fit, cycling to work can be an excellent practice to incorporate into your everyday life. Cycling doesn’t necessarily need to be seen as a sport but as a mindful and eco-friendly way to contribute to a sustainable future (no matter how small).

Unsure how to start your cycling journey? Here are a few key factors to keep in mind when you hit the roads and why this is a beneficial practice for the earth and yourself.

Reasons you should consider cycling to work

  • A great money saver – You won’t have to constantly check the ever-changing petrol prices and adjust your monthly budget accordingly. Bicycle maintenance is far cheaper than car maintenance, especially if you use your bicycle mainly for transport to work.
  • To reduce your carbon footprint – While this is obvious, it is essential to mention it. Cycling creates no harmful emissions, and you’ll have the opportunity to stand with humanity against climate change by living more sustainably.
  • Learn more about your city and its paths – Cycling to work can open up a whole new world while peddling in your city, as you move with the ebbs and flows of it much more interactively. You’ll soon find new roads to take, making you experience your city differently.
  • You’ll likely experience a positive impact on your mood – As exercise generally releases mood-enhancing chemicals, you’ll actually feel more excited to get up and go to work every morning. What could be better to uplift a blue Monday than by getting a kick of endorphins on your ride?

Tips for your commute to work on a bicycle

Don’t cycle in your work outfit

As you likely need to stay for many hours in the office, you’ll want to keep your clothes nice and fresh for as long as possible. Cycling in your suit will more than likely build up an untimely sweat, as the everyday materials are not as breathable as others. Keep your work clothes in a backpack so you can make a quick switch at work.

Do a quick check of your bike every day

Whether you ride every morning or choose to ride from time to time, you’ll need to do a safety check on your bike to make sure it’s road-worthy. If you skip this step, you’ll increase your chance of a problem during your trip and cause you to be late to work.

Stay vigilant

There are a number of things you’ll need to be aware of on the road, from ongoing traffic to seedy characters eyeing your bicycle. Be sure to keep pepper spray on hand in case anything goes awry.
