If you are considering booking that reasonably priced 1Time flight to Zanzibar, then a day trip to Chumbe Island Coral Park is an absolute must! This eco-friendly private nature reserve includes a fully protected coral reef sanctuary, forest reserve, historical ruins, and an eco-lodge run by friendly, knowledgeable staff.
The day kicked off with a 8km boat ride off the west coast of Zanzibar town to the pristine Chumbe Island. After arrival, refreshments, and a brief orientation the activities commenced:
11am
We geared up to snorkel along the east coast of the island, home to one of the world’s most beautiful coral gardens. The shallow reef offers an assortment of eye candy with over 200 species of coral and 400 species of fish.
12.30pm
Next we had a break to shower and freshen up in our eco-friendly day bungalow before heading to lunch.
1pm
A buffet lunch with an assortment of dishes was phenomenal as is the breath-taking view (seriously look at the photos!) Each couple has their own secluded table overlooking the turquoise ocean.
3pm
After over-indulging at lunch and having a quick dip in the ocean we rejoined the group for the Forest Walk. A knowledgable ranger guided us through the inter-tidal pools and forest reserve that houses many unique plant species. The walk concluded with a climb up to the top of the old lighthouse for an incredible panoramic view of the island.
4.15pm
Reluctantly, we headed back to the boat and bid farewell to a true gem – definitely one of the most beautiful natural locations I have visited!
For any outdoor enthusiast, it would be a shame not to put this day trip at the top of your to-do list. There are limited spaces though so be sure to book in advance.
