‘Artists are struggling,’ SA’s Pearl Thusi tells minister

Posted on 1 July 2021

Cape Town– Media personality and actress, Pearl Thusi, has pleaded with the Minister of Sports Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, to give support to South African artists, as the arts industry continues to battle under the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a tweet on Monday, Thusi asked Mthethwa to give financial support to artists, saying they were struggling.

“Dear Minister @NathiMthethwaSA, I say this in the sincerely way…  artists are struggling… can you assist with actual support/ money like how you tweet us congrats and condolences,” Thusi wrote.

While it seemed that artists were getting on their feet following the second wave earlier this year, the recent move to level 4 lockdown has put a halt to most activity in the hospitality and entertainment industries, a report by IOL said.

Thusi joins many other artists who have called for the support of local artists by the government amid the pandemic.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently extended South Africa’s level 4 lockdown for another 14 days, with restrictions remaining in place until July 25.

In a national address on July 11, Ramaphosa said that the last two weeks of restrictions were necessary to curb the third wave of infections in South Africa which has been caused by the Delta variant of Covid-19.
