Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party has distanced itself from reports that it intends to ban women and girls from wearing miniskirts and trousers in public.
According to BBC, this comes following reports that the party planned to introduce laws that prohibited women aged 16 and above from wearing trousers and miniskirts.
But in a statement, Zanu-PF national spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo refuted the reports and dismissed them as “fake news”.
“The revolutionary party, Zanu-PF distances itself from circulating fake news saying the party is lobbying or mooting for the disbandment of miniskirts and trousers for women,” said Moyo.

The state-owned Herald newspaper said the “fake messages” were generated in the name of Zanu-PF acting national political commissar, Cde Patrick Chinamasa.
Moyo accused an NGO aligned with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party for spreading the “false news”.
“The fake news whose origins have been traced to an NGO allied to the opposition parties reflect the views of that organisation and its handlers who have no respect for women, women’s rights and culture,” Moyo said.
He said the liberation struggle for the independence of Zimbabwe from colonial rule was fought and won by “combat men and women, and trousers had no gender”.
He added: “The party’s women’s league was formed by combat women… To this day, significant strides have been made by the Zanu-PF government to advance women’s rights… It is, therefore, ridiculous that a giant mass perty formed and existing on the shoulders of an empowered women’s league can be attributed such trivia on dressing.”
