Tucked away near the picturesque towns of Clarens and Fouriesburg in the spectacular Eastern Free State, surrounded by sandstone mountains and nestled along the Little Caledon River, Wyndford Holiday Farm has been a home-away-from-home to families for 101 years.
As the car turns off the road, just short of the Lesotho border and the Maluti mountains beyond, the kids in the back start to bounce on their seats: this is their special place. There is not a more telling sign that this is a place loved by its guests than how frequently they return. In many cases, grandparents who also came as kids have passed the tradition onto their kids, and on it goes.
Wyndford is, in many ways, the same today as it was in the decades before. Defined by its three hearty home-cooked meals and twice-daily tea times in the summer house, children and adults alike are beckoned by the clanging of the kitchen bell from all around the farm. Twice-daily guided hikes for all levels of fitness in the surrounding mountains (partially to work off said meals), horse rides, a game of bowls on the green or just a quiet seat in the lush gardens to read a book, are all part of the charm.
