The new buzzword for 2021 seems to be ‘workcation’, referring to travellers who visit holiday destinations while working remotely.
Neal van Beers and his partner, Charmaine Sanchez are Canadian passport holders but have decided to seek warmer waters during the unforgiving Canadian winter.
They came across the Anantara Veli resort’s long-stay package, which allows visitors to stay for any period of time within the year for $30,000 (R432,805). This includes a room, daily breakfast and transportation.
Here, they live a laid-back lifestyle of business and leisure, snorkelling and suntanning between virtual meetings.
‘I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity,’ Van Beers told Insider. The couple flew into the Maldives in December 2020 after passing the necessary travel requirements. As international travellers, they can stay for up to 90 days before having to fly out and return if they wish to stay longer, and they intend to do just that. Their package is valid until December 23 2021.
International visitors to the Maldives must provide a confirmed hotel reservation, submit a health form within 24 hours before flying and a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate no more than 96 hours before flying.
