Small Town Spotlight: Howick

Posted on 7 August 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Howick, located in the uMgungundlovu District of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a charming Midlands country town. It is located on the N3 motorway, 1050 meters above sea level, approximately 90 kilometres from Durban and 20 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital. The town has warm summers and chilly winters, with snow frequently covering the nearby Drakensberg Mountains.

The breathtaking Howick Falls are formed when the Umgeni River plunges 95 meters over dolerite cliffs in the heart of Howick. The falls, known in Zulu as KwaNogqaza, or “Place of the Tall One,” are steeped in local legend. The pool at the falls’ base is said to be home to the Inkhanyamba, an eel-like creature with a horse-like head.

When angered, this mythical being rises from the depths, causing thunderstorms, lightning, and even tornadoes. As peace returns, a rainbow arches over the falls, signifying the restoration of calm. Local lore holds that only sangomas, traditional healers, can safely approach the falls to offer prayers and worship to the Inkhanyamba, ancestral spirits, and the ‘Great God.’

In recent years, Howick has expanded with several retirement villages along Karkloof Falls Road. Notable among these are Amberfield, Amberglen, Amber Valley, Amber Ridge, BrandonsField, and Amber Lakes. Amberglen, in particular, stands out for its comprehensive amenities, including a large communal dining room, a bar, and various planned activities that create a vibrant community atmosphere.

Tourism thrives in Howick, being a key stop on the Midlands Meander, a scenic route that stretches from Pietermaritzburg to the Drakensberg Mountains. This drive offers stunning views of forests and charming towns, with plenty of arts and crafts outlets to explore. Don’t miss local spots like Yellowwood Cafe & Restaurant (073 235 7369), Highgate Wine Estate (066 449 2620) in Lions River, and Woodstone Restaurant & Wine Bar (033 814 0354).
