While many travel to tropical destinations to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, specific sandy destinations offer another type of vibrant activity. There are island spots across the globe whose locals are cute critters and creatures.
Unsure where these animal-adorned tropical places reside? Take a look at a few islands known for their incredible inhabitants, where travellers can even visit some.
Pig Beach (Bahamas)
A sand-filled haven on the Big Major Cay in the Bahamas, Pig Beach is an idyllic island that has become a popular tourist attraction because of its pink and porky pigs. With sparkling waters, pristine sandy bays, and pigs swimming at their leisure – this picturesque place is a must for animal lovers.
The history of how these pigs have come to be on the island is clouded in mystery, one theorising that they survived a shipwreck. The pigs are considered to be relatively friendly, but don’t try to feed these piggies; otherwise, they’ll be tempted to board the ship you are on.
Duiker Island (South Africa)
An adorable animal colony on an island closer to home, Duiker Island is considered an excellent destination to visit on a cruise in Hout Bay. On the cruise, you’ll see thousands of Cape Fur Seals lazing on Duiker Island (also referred to as Seal Island).
A type of aquatic safari to come close and observe seals in their natural habitat, this experience is an excellent choice for travellers looking to see wildlife from a distance. Various seabird species are also known to inhabit the island, so be sure to pack your binoculars.
Islands of the Tortoises (Galápagos)
Known as one of the cornerstones of Charles Darwin’s research, this network of sandy shores is sprinkled with tortoises. While many shelled creatures inhabit these islands, there are many ongoing breeding programmes to save these giant tortoises from extinction. If you’re looking to observe these tortoises, you can visit the El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve on Santa Cruz Island.
Snake Island (Brazil)
A fascinating destination that snakes entirely inhabit, this island is a place that is forbidden to enter due to the sheer number of venomous reptiles on the premises. The only humans on the island are a small number of scientists for research purposes.
Located near the coast of Brazil, this is considered a ghost town (or island) because it has an abandoned lighthouse. One of the venomous species found on the island is the golden lancehead viper, which is critically endangered and can only be found in this particular sunny space.
