Small Town Spotlight: Keurboomstrand

Posted on 19 August 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Keurboomstrand, a charming seaside escape near Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, has a serene atmosphere and natural beauty. This resort town, named after the local keurboom tree, is located along the Keurbooms River. Cathedral Rock, also known as Arch Rock, is a stunning rock formation with notable openings that contributes to its coastal allure. This geological wonder, which is part of a scenic trail, was once a spiritually significant site for indigenous communities. The rock’s arch and smaller opening above it, which resemble a cathedral’s rose window, are ideal for taking photos.

The Matjes River Rock Shelter, located nearby, provides a glimpse into the past with San artefacts dating back 11,000 years, making it a national monument. The large shell middens here are among the largest in the world, despite some erosion. Portuguese explorers from the São Gonçalo shipwrecked in 1630, marking the beginning of European presence in South Africa.

Today, Keurboomstrand draws campers, anglers, and beachgoers. The junction of the Bitou and Keurbooms rivers creates a tranquil lagoon near the beach, ideal for swimming despite occasional strong currents at the mouth. The beach, with its driftwood and direct exposure to the Indian Ocean, has large waves but is ideal for swimming and exploring rock pools on calm days. Visitors frequently see dolphins and, during whale season, majestic whales. Keurboomstrand is still a quieter alternative to other beaches in Plettenberg Bay, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

What to do in Keurboomstrand

For a taste of local cuisine, Ristorante Enrico, known for its exceptional offerings, is a must-try.

Keurbooms River

The Keurbooms River stretches about 85 km and covers a catchment area of 1,080 km². Originating south of Uniondale in the Langkloof, it flows southeast, passing De Vlugt and the Prince Alfred Pass. It then meanders along the R340 road before turning south, crossing the N2, and emptying into the Indian Ocean through the Keurbooms Estuary near Plettenberg Bay.

This river marks the eastern boundary for the Cape galaxias, a fish endemic to the Cape Floristic Region. This species shares its habitat with introduced trout and lives between the Keurbooms and Olifants rivers. While considered near threatened in South Africa, similar species have faced extinction in Australia due to competition from salmonids.

Keurbooms Nature Reserve

The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, nestled just outside Plettenberg Bay, spans 740 hectares of pristine wilderness. Though small in size, the reserve is renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty.
