Small Town Spotlight: Riversdale

Posted on 11 September 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Nestled along the N2 highway between Cape Town and George, Riversdale, a charming town in the Hessequa region of the Western Cape, invites you to explore its unique offerings. Surrounded by the scenic Langeberg Mountains, with Sleeping Beauty Mountain keeping watch, Riversdale serves as a central hub for nearby farming communities and coastal retreats like Witsand and Stilbaai.

Riversdale surprises visitors with its treasures, including the second-largest collection of Thomas Bowler paintings in South Africa and the country’s only Ukrainian Museum of Culture. The town’s history stretches back to its founding on the Doornkraal farm, named after Harry Rivers, and its official proclamation on 30 August 1838.

Riversdale is more than just a stopover; it’s a town brimming with local pride, thanks to the “I Am Local” movement. This initiative supports locally owned businesses, fostering community spirit and boosting the local economy.
