Small Town Spotlight: Stilbaai

Posted on 10 October 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Nestled where the Goukou River meets the Indian Ocean, Stilbaai is a vibrant gem along South Africa’s Hessequa coast. Known as the Bay of Sleeping Beauty, it charms visitors with its sandy Blue Flag beaches and mild climate. This peaceful village becomes a water sports haven in summer, with kite-surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling, and canoeing. The small harbour, a beloved spot for photos, sits near the shell museum. It offers stunning harbour views.

Stilbaai’s history is fascinating, with ancient fish traps thought to be built by early Khoi communities along its shores. Just 12 kilometres away, the Blombos Caves reveal artefacts estimated to be 77,000 years old, giving a glimpse into one of humanity’s oldest known settlements. Easily reached from the N2, Stilbaai has a small airstrip, with George Airport just 140 km away, welcoming larger flights. The town, together with neighbouring Jongensfontein and Melkhoutfontein, is home to around 7,500 residents.

This beautiful floral kingdom is celebrated each year during the Stilbaai Fynbos Festival, set for 21-28 September 2024. Between its natural wonders, rich history, and vibrant community, this coastal haven has plenty to offer.
