Small Town Spotlight: Wakkerstroom

Posted on 2 October 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Nestled in a serene valley beneath the watchful Ossewakop Mountain, Wakkerstroom blends rich history with stunning natural scenery. As the second oldest town in Mpumalanga, it boasts a heritage as vibrant as its landscape. Founded in 1859 near the KwaZulu-Natal border, Wakkerstroom, or “Awake Stream,” has evolved into a sought-after retreat for both tranquillity and adventure seekers.

The town’s historic cemetery tells stories of its past, featuring the final resting places of early settlers and soldiers from the Anglo-Boer War. Wakkerstroom’s motto, Inter Flumina et Montes, meaning “between rivers and mountains,” perfectly captures its picturesque setting.

Chris Smit, a dedicated local figure, has left a lasting mark on the community through his work in preserving local history and guiding visitors to cultural landmarks. Known for its exceptional birdwatching opportunities, Wakkerstroom is a haven for spotting rare species like Rudd’s Lark and the Blue Crane. Visitors can also enjoy hiking and scenic drives.

To symbolise the town’s development and heritage, a steam locomotive is displayed next to the Town Hall. This historic engine stands as a tribute to Wakkerstroom’s journey and its connection to the past.

Just 274 kilometres southeast of Johannesburg, Wakkerstroom remains a charming escape, inviting those who appreciate its enduring beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
