Small Town Spotlight: Willowmore

Posted on 27 August 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Willowmore, founded in 1874, began as a trading post on the farm called “The Willows.” Different accounts explain how the town got its name. Some say it was named after William Joseph, the farm’s occupant, while others believe farmer Lukmkul named it by combining his wife’s maiden name, Petronella Catherina Moore, with the nearby willow trees.

Explore Willowmore’s 19th-century architectural gems.

Willowmore has traditionally depended on farming for its economy. In the late 1990s, the town emerged as a major producer of mohair. Unlike many other towns in the region, Willowmore benefits from a consistent water supply sourced from boreholes on the Wanhoop farm, located 26 kilometers away.

Key Historical Sites and Attractions

Bakers Dam, built in 1960 to supply water to steam locomotives and now a popular birdwatching spot, serves as a key site in Willowmore.

The town also features several historic buildings, including the Old Dutch Reformed Rectory (1864), the Old Jail (1896), St Matthews Church (1881), and the beautifully restored Town Hall. The Town Hall, thought to have been built in 1896, boasts a unique clock tower.

The Wonderboom, located 12 kilometers from Aberdeen on the N9, showcases a natural wonder where a Shepherd’s Tree and a Ghwarrie tree grow side by side, creating a unique “needle and thread” effect.

Other notable landmarks include Die Rooi Bruggie, a pedestrian bridge over the Noodsloot River, and the Old Blackstone Power Station. This power station, which served the town until 1984, still houses six Lister Blackstone diesel generators. Visitors can explore these historical sites to learn more about Willowmore’s rich history.

Visitors can hike, mountain bike, and explore 4×4 trails, with opportunities to hunt kudu, wild pigs, and springbok. The town and its surroundings offer a range of experiences, from dining at local restaurants and coffee shops to admiring the region’s natural beauty through bird watching and outdoor activities.
