Small Town Spotlight: Witsand

Posted on 14 September 2024 By Nelson Kalula

Witsand, nestled along the Breede River estuary in the Western Cape, is a quaint coastal town blending natural beauty with adventure. Known as South Africa’s Whale Nursery, it boasts 4 kilometres of pristine beaches, lush Cape Fynbos, and the expansive Breede River. From June to November, Southern Right Whales gather in the bay, making it a prime whale-watching spot.

Water sports enthusiasts flock to Witsand for kite-surfing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing. Located in the Hessequa region, also called the Explorer’s Garden Route, the town offers a unique mix of sea and river activities. Spend your days exploring the beaches, hiking short trails through vibrant flora, or birdwatching species like the Black Oyster Catcher and Blue Crane.

Witsand’s history dates back to 1831, when the British colonial government granted the land to Captain Benjamin Moodie. The town, named after its white sandy beach, has been known as Witsand since at least 1867. Initially a fishing haven, it officially became a town in 1951 as more people built cottages.

Today, Witsand is a peaceful retreat, rich in history and surrounded by nature. It’s also a surprising hub for Bitcoin adoption in Africa, with most local merchants accepting digital currency. Despite the Breede River being home to some of the largest bull sharks, there have been no recorded shark attacks on people.

Don’t miss local spots like Breede River Lodge (072 767 3779), Marzanne’s Restaurant (083 628 4946), and Ellie’s on Main (076 974 9031).

What to do in Witsand:

If you’re seeking adventure, Witsand has it all. Kiteboarding, surfing, paragliding, and deep-sea fishing offer thrills for every enthusiast. Nature lovers can explore ostrich trails and birdwatch, and you might even spot a bushbuck by the roadside.

Witsand is a kite-surfing haven, thanks to its stunning coastline and ideal weather. This sport, combining aerobics with resistance, is not only exhilarating but also a great workout. With top-notch conditions, Witsand ranks as one of South Africa’s best kite-surfing spots.

The Breede River estuary is rich in birdlife, with flocks of flamingos adding pink hues to the landscape. Witsand’s historical charm shines in landmarks like the Barry Memorial Church, built in 1859, and the old woolshed from the 1860s. These sites, along with the Kraaltjie harbour, tell the story of the Barry family, who helped open the area to commerce.

Fishing in Witsand is a cherished tradition. Locals often share amusing stories of those who got lost or stranded while fishing. The bay and estuary are also excellent for snorkelling and Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, especially in summer when the Breede River buzzes with activity.

For a relaxing option, join the Hopkins Land Parkrun. This free 5-kilometre run offers scenic views of local flora and fauna. The flat, gravel path and vibrant canola fields in winter create a picturesque experience.

Witsand connects to the inland villages of Slangrivier and Vermaaklikheid via gravel roads, ideal for cycling or 4×4 trips. These roads also link to Overberg towns like Malgas and Buffeljagsrivier, popular for mountain biking challenges.

Each November, Witsand hosts the Vlakte Marathon finish line, which starts in Heidelberg. This race qualifies runners for the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons. The 2024 event on 23 November is a major local highlight.
