I’m a photographer and writer, travelling over the course of a year to 31 of South Africa’s most special nature reserves and national parks. My goal is to photograph the country’s last remaining wild places, and to interview the people who make conservation possible.
I spent my first week of Year in the Wild on Table Mountain, sleeping in various tented camps, as well as the luxurious Overseers Cottage. Although my home town is Cape Town, I never get tired of the mountain, its scenery, fynbos, ecology and hiking trails. I don’t want to sound like a typical Capetonian, but wow, we have it good! And it makes me happy to know that everyone in the city seems to love it too.
This week has been crazy with weather – the first few days were peachy, sunny and warm. Then the north-westerly wind brought an icy storm with plenty of hail and rain. But whatever the weather, I enjoyed it. I was fortunate to stay at Silvermine Tented Camp, Overseers Cottage and Orangekloof Tented Camp (my favourite spot on the mountain for sure!) These are all part of the Hoerikwaggo Hiking Trail, but the camps and cottages can also be rented just for a night or two … you don’t need to hike to them, you can drive (with permission) to them as they all have access roads.
