One month to go, yet it still feels like a dream that is soon to be rudely interrupted by my piercing alarm clock or the distant roar of the freeway. Every day that rolls over I realise I am planning and plotting yet still not realising my adventure is around the corner. So where am I going, why now, why resign and why just leave? I say, why not.
My journey begins on the idyllic island of Mauritius where I will be volunteering on a conservation project with a local NGO for about four weeks. Here I will learn about Bottlenose and Spinner dolphins, Sperm whales and Humpback whales and other marine life which we will track, record and educate the community about. I’m thinking, long hours in the sun on the boat staring out into the turquoise waters, doing something to reduce my carbon footprint by giving my time to care about the earth and its creatures, who could ask for more! Over the low sunsets I hope to fill you in on my adventures by retelling the stories as they unfold under the clear blue sky as I drink in the culture and local way of life long lost to the hoards of tourists that flock here all year round. You know what they say about Mauritius, there are only two seasons – winter and summer – and I’m going in summer! Oh yes I am.
