The Paul Cluver Amphitheatre is one of the most incredible places to go for an outdoor music concert. The amphitheatre is in a grove of gum trees on the beautiful Paul Cluver Wine Estate in Elgin, about 45 minutes from Cape Town city centre. The drive to Elgin takes you over spectacular Sir Lowry’s Pass, past the Steenbras Dam and into the gorgeous wine and apple-growing countryside that is the very start of the Cape’s Famous Garden Route.
My friends and I arrived on the evening of 5 February in a state of some excitement: Imogen Heap is not the kind of musician South Africans usually get to see performing live. But thanks to the daughter of a concert organiser who is a huge fan of Imogen Heap and her music, the artist was in Cape Town for just two nights.
Paul Cluver amphitheatre was a fitting location for her lyrical, whimsical and wonderful performance. The blue gums seemed to sigh with pleasure as each new song started. Imogen herself seemed inspired by the setting: she performed late into the night until, at last, in order not to break the nature reserve’s curfew, the music and lights faded into the stillness of the Elgin evening.
Luckily, I’d taken this video as a more concrete reminder of an incredible evening spent in a beautiful place, entertained by an amazing musician.
