What better way to feel good when relaxing with a glass of wine than knowing that a portion of your purchase goes to wildlife conservation? Here are a couple of wines that support desert elephant and rhino conservation, respectively.
Balance wines supporting desert elephant conservation
Balance wines are situated at the Overhex Winery outside Worcester and for every bottle sold, a contribution is made to fund the EHRA PEACE project, an educational programme promoting the peaceful cohabitation of local communities with desert elephants in Southern Africa.
The cellar door prices per bottle are R47 for the Balance Classic range, R62 for the Winemaker’s Selection white wines and R67 for the Winemaker’s Selection reds.
As an added bit of fun, there’s the Balance game that can be played at balance.wine, where you can win Balance Bucks, which can be redeemed with your next purchase of Balance wines and support the conservation of desert elephants. The game can also be accessed through a QR code found on Balance wine bottles.

Van Loveren’s Rhino Run range supporting rhino conservation
Van Loveren Family Vineyards has continued its contribution to nature conservation in South Africa with the release of the latest vintage Rhino Run wines.
The Rhino Run range comprises five wines as well as a sixth limited release collector’s item, The Last One Shiraz 2013.
The five Rhino Run wines include the Rhino Run Chardonnay 2017, Rhino Run Chenin Blanc 2018, Rhino Run Ian Player 2016 (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend), the Rhino Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, and the Rhino Run Pinotage 2017.
The white wines are priced at around R60 a bottle, while the three red wines sell for around R71 a bottle.
The sixth limited release collector’s item, The Last One Shiraz 2013 joins the line-up, and what makes this Shiraz extra special is that only 1,215 bottles, selling at R1,215 each, are released.
The significance of this number represents the total number of rhinos poached in 2014. This limited-edition wine is hand0-0bottled, waxed and labelled, featuring the signature of Cellar Master Bussell Retief on the label, reaffirming Van Loveren’s support to combat rhino poaching.
