After having read several reviews on this burger joint, Jean and I decided to get involved and visit The Dogs Bollocks Restaurant in Cape Town. Most of the comments pointed out that this spot is unpretentious, with affordable wine, has a relaxing atmosphere and has the best burgers in town.
We missioned to The Dogs Bollocks and even though it was a bit hard to find (simply because we’re noobs when it comes to directions), we found this spot right opposite a red building on Roodehek (which is a one-way street – make sure to drive up Buitenkant street and not Hope street). The first view of The Dogs Bollocks was of a chalkboard with the different types of burgers and on the left was a half-open garage door with seating inside – like a driveway/alley. It had been a very long day, so instead of having our burgers there, we opted for a take-away.
The Dogs Bollocks restaurant is owned by a fella called Nigel Wood, who also makes the burgers and the wine served at this restaurant. The wine label is Ukuva iAfrica and it’s packaged in a cool cardboard tube of 1,5l (called U-Tubes) – from what I read, the Dogs Bollocks was opened to promote his wine. Nigel only makes 30 burgers an evening and if you miss out, it’s just too bad. I ordered the garlic and black pepper burger and Jean ordered the Mexican mole.
The burgers took roughly 10 minutes and cost between R50 to R55. We waited in the ‘courtyard’ by the garden chairs and tables, where you can also have your meal. The reviewers who said this spot was unpretentious weren’t joking. But then again, Jean and I love these kinds of places. We paid for our burgers and wine (bear in mind, there are no card facilities), went home and I got sexy with my burger. Thank you Nigel, they were delicious and the patty, oh-so-juicy.
