Biltong is more than just padkos, and in the summer months one can work up a real craving for some lekker local flavour.
In September we travelled to Namibia along the N7. Just before reaching Bitterfontein we stopped at a petrol station to stretch our legs in the middle of the night. My guess is that we were in Klawer (Western Cape). It was so early the petrol station wasn’t open yet, but we went out into the opaque 3am darkness nevertheless. A light nearby illuminated one of those Coca-Cola signs you see at every tuck shop in the country – in the world. I squinted through the light drizzle in the middle of the night to read the name in thick red type: ‘The Best Blerrie Biltong’.
While you probably have a favourite biltong shop (mine is Chops in Plumstead, Cape Town), what do you do when you’re on the road far away from it and craving a lekker stuk biltong or droëwors? Keep an eye out for these biltong spots around the country.
