A Toast to South Africa’s Wine Regions

Premiering on 29 January 2025 on BBC Lifestyle (DStv Channel 174), this five-part series is a love letter to South Africa’s iconic wine regions. From the rolling hills of Stellenbosch to the picturesque Franschhoek Valley and the untamed beauty of Swartland, Gary immerses himself in the culture, history, and craft behind the country’s most exceptional wines.

Gary’s passion for wine is palpable throughout the series. As a wine entrepreneur, he’s tasted his fair share of vintages, but South Africa brought something unique to the table. “I suggested South Africa because I had recently been there, and it just has this ‘wow’ factor,” Gary says. “The landscapes are incredible, the wine is fantastic, and the culture is so rich. It’s an extraordinary place.”

Each episode is a feast for the senses. Viewers join Gary as he sips on bold Shiraz, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, and South Africa’s signature Pinotage, learning about the distinct terroirs that make these wines world-class. But the show isn’t just about wine. It’s about connection, discovery, and adventure. Whether he’s savouring gourmet meals, engaging with local communities, or taking in breathtaking sunsets and starry skies, Gary’s enthusiasm is contagious.

Familiar Faces, New Adventures

Some familiar faces are joining him on this journey. Friends like Ben Shephard, Mica Paris, Jane McDonald, and Michaela Strachan add a warm, personal touch to the series. “It was all about who was available at the time and who I could share these incredible experiences with,” Gary explains. Together, they create moments of laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories that will resonate with audiences.

The series also reveals Gary’s lesser-seen side: that of a curious traveller. This adventure felt refreshingly different for someone who has toured the globe extensively. “When you’re touring, you often miss the heart of a place. This was the first time in years I really got to stop, talk to people, and soak it all in. It was wonderful,” he shares.

And, of course, no Gary Barlow project would be complete without music. Hidden within the series are subtle original compositions that accompany the visuals. “It’s not a music show, but I couldn’t resist slipping in a few pieces, including some Take That classics,” Gary happily admitted.

A Celebration of Life’s Simple Pleasures

Beyond the wine and scenery, the show further strengthens Gary’s belief in savouring life’s moments. He reflects, “I wanted this series to be approachable. You don’t need to be a wine expert to enjoy it. It’s about celebrating good food, great wine, and even better company.”

As Gary raises a glass to South Africa, he’s already dreaming of where his wine adventures might take him next. But for now, he hopes audiences will join him on this incredible journey.

Catch Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa every Wednesday from 29 January to 26 February 2025 on BBC Lifestyle (DStv Channel 174) at 20:00. It’s a toast to life, exploration, and the simple joys of wine
