Picture this: a sunny Saturday morning with a steaming cup of freshly ground coffee and a plateful of the most delicious waffles – crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
Maple syrup, Nutella, powdered sugar, bananas, ice cream…practically any topping goes well with a classic waffle.
Variations of waffles come from all over the world. It’s no surprise that this delicious cake-like dish that can be eaten at any time has a day dedicated to it.
If you want to celebrate International Waffle Day, here’s a classic waffle recipe to do it the right way.
INGREDIENTS
Serves 10 or 12
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 ½ cups warm milk
- ⅓ cup butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
INSTRUCTIONS
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, baking powder and sugar then set aside. Pre-heat your waffle iron to the desired temperature. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then stir in the milk, butter and vanilla. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and beat until well blended. Ladle the batter into the hot waffle iron and cook until golden and crisp. Serve immediately with toppings of your choice.
