Crafted at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, the Three Ships Bourbon Cask impressed judges with its distinctive flavour profile.
Tasting notes included ‘varnished oak, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, and smoked pineapple’ on the nose, followed by ‘cornflake, caramel sauce, and ripe fruits’ on the palate, culminating in a finish of ‘spicy oak, brown sugar, and vanilla.’

This achievement adds to a growing list of accolades for South African whiskies.
In 2012, Three Ships 5-Year-Old Premium Select was awarded World’s Best Blended Whisky, and in 2024, the 12-Year-Old Double Wood expression received the title of World’s Best Blended Limited Release.
Additionally, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, another product of the James Sedgwick Distillery, was named World’s Best Grain Whisky in 2013 and again in 2024 for its Founders Collection 15-Year-Old.
These consistent international recognitions underscore South Africa’s growing prominence in the global whisky scene, showcasing the country’s ability to produce world-class spirits that stand shoulder to shoulder with traditional whisky-producing nations.
