Savouring the sea: South Africa’s seafood specialties

Posted on 16 August 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

South Africa has a diverse and delicious culinary scene, from sticky koeksisters to spicy curries. Of course, being situated along the coastline means South Africa’s seafood cuisine is up there with the best.

You know what you’re doing this weekend if you haven’t tried these seafood specialties.

Snoek Braai

South Africa seafood

Snoek is a South African fish marinated in spices, garlic, and often apricot jam. It’s cooked over an open flame, or braai, and makes for a delicious dinner with salad and garlic bread. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy braai-ed snoek, visit Die Strandloper in Langebaan. Spend a leisurely afternoon beside the sea eating a ten-course meal of freshly-caught seafood dishes, including snoek and potatoes.

Cape Malay Fish Curry

A Cape Malay Fish Curry combines Indian and Cape Malay influences and features fish like snoek or yellowtail. It’s cooked in spicy, fragrant coconut milk-based curry sauce and served with bread or rice. Bo-Kaap Kombuis serves a traditional Cape Malay Fish Curry that will have your tastebuds dancing.

Fish and Chips

A simple classic that is loved by many is fish and chips. Whether served in crinkly newspaper or professionally plated, as long as the fish is crispy and the chips are hot, you know you’re in for a good meal. Try out This is Eat in Port Elizabeth for a great fish and chips dish.

Seafood Paella

Although paella is not a native South African dish, seafood paella is very popular, especially in coastal areas of the country. A mixture of saffron-infused rice, vegetables, and fresh seafood makes this dish hearty and flavourful. Enjoy a seafood paella at Julio’s Umhlanga.

Cape Oysters

South Africa's seafood

The Cape Oysters are a true delicacy, and if you visit Knysna, you’ll find a whole festival dedicated to the oyster. Paired with a dressing or just a squeeze of lemon, you definitely need to slurp back an oyster or two when in the Cape. Dry Dock in Knysna is the perfect place to enjoy the estuary, the vibe, and some oysters.

Crayfish (Rock Lobster)

There’s nothing better than a day in the sea, soaking up the sunshine, and then tucking into a warm crayfish dish, prepared in a butter and garlic sauce and grilled to perfection. Olive and Oil in Umhlanga has a crayfish dish on their menu that never disappoints.

Mussels

Mussels prepared in creamy white wine and garlic sauce are a taste sensation, especially for seafood lovers searching for a rich dining experience. Enjoy a delicious mussel dish with your feet in the sand at Die Walskipper Jeffreys Bay.
